Annual Convention Update: Focusing YOUR Professional Development

Picture this: St. Patrick's Day weekend, the sun battling the wind for supremacy, and you are surrounded by 12,000 of your like-minded colleagues in the "Crescent City," New Orleans, Louisiana - home of ASCD's 63rd Annual Conference and Exhibit Show (March 15-17, 2008). As always, ASCD put on a fine conference with some of the top-flight speakers and presenters we have come to expect from the world's foremost education organization.

From Carl Glickman and Carol Ann Tomlinson to Bob Marzano and Daniel Duke, it is a difficult proposition to pick out any single highlighted presentation. With over 500 sessions spanning the three-day conference, ASCD packed much wallop into a weekend in "The Big Easy." Certainly, most attendees left with an appreciation for the conference theme: Reinventing Schools - Courageous leadership for positive change.

Alma Powell, wife of Colin Powell and chair of the America's Promise Alliance, delivered the opening keynote, which proved to be much more controversial than originally intended. Educators debated the merit and feasibility of Mrs. Powell's positions, which called for dramatic and concerted change efforts from all corners of our society to ensure that our children are well-prepared for life. Though seemingly aligned with ASCD's vision of teaching and reaching The Whole Child, Mrs. Powell's comments have stirred much comment. See the blog at www.ASCD.org for more information.

Less controversially, EducationHall's Pete Hall and Alisa Simeral introduced the contents of their new book, which remains untitled, in a Sunday morning presentation. Late-night Bourbon Street revelers awakened post-haste to discuss the art of differentiated supervision and learn of a framework for instructional coaching (see Mrs. Simeral's article, "Coaching Along the Continuum," in this issue of The Launching Pad for more information). The book, slated to be a premium ASCD member benefit, will be released in December, 2008.

If for no other reason than to immerse yourself in a cornucopia of professional learning opportunities, joined by thousands of educators feeling the same pressures and simultaneous euphoria of this profession, you might consider attending the 2009 Annual Conference and Exhibit Show. Hosted by Orlando, Florida, the 2009 Conference will share the theme "Learning Beyond Boundaries" during the March 14-16 event.

It's not too late to register and join us for the 2008 Annual Convention and Exposition with the National Association of Elementary School Principals. Held April 4-8 in Nashville, Tennessee, this promises to be another of the year's finest professional development venues for school leaders.

If the mood strikes you, register for a preconference workshop, attend one of the distinguished lectures, or hit one of the many concurrent sessions covering a wide range of school leadership topics. Or, shoot, the convention is hosted by the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, so you know there's plenty to do in and about the conference.

Again, our Executive Director Pete Hall will be on-site to deliver a session entitled, "Welcome to the Principalship" on Monday, April 7. Author of The First-Year Principal and holder of a National Principals Mentoring certificate from NAESP, Mr. Hall seems a fitting speaker on such a subject. Other speakers include author Daniel Pink, political pundits James Carville and Mary Matalin, and retired Army Lt. Colonel Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch, among others.

What will the weekend hold in Nashville? Only time will tell, but early returns show professional growth, new learning, plenty of connections, and probably a dose or two of country music! Go to www.naesp.org for more information, and we'll see y'all there...
